SILENT VALLEY DAM PROJECT MUST BE REVIVED

SILENT VALLEY
Long ago, there was a proposal to build a dam in what is called ‘Silent Valley’ in the Western Ghats in Malabar region. Compared to the southern districts , Malabar was suffering from acute shortage of power. There are few industries and this could be changed by building the dam.
The site selected was ideal. There are two steep rocky mountains, and the river is flowing between these. Like the Bhakra dam in Punjab, thi could be constructed to give a high water level and consequently, good quantity of power.
It was the time of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who became the victim of propaganda by the so called environmentalists , who objected the dam, saying that rare fauna and animals would become extinct, as a result of the dam. It was finally abandoned.
This project could be revived even now. Remember how Modi steadfastly maintained his object and built the Narmada Dam in Gujarath.
