RELEVANCE OF MERCY PETITION Law is blind ; it does not bother to find out the human being who perpetrated the crime. The person involved may be the only son of the parents or he may be the bread winner , on whom the family depends for survival. I remember a case in which an eminent Doctor was convicted for murder of his wife. He was given the benefit of life imprisonment by the Governor , because of his utility for the public. In almost all cases , the mercy petition is considered by the Governor or the President on ‘political ‘ considerations. This is the purpose of this power granted to them. If a Hindu was involved , will the President refuse mercy? When the first Communist Government assumed power in Keralam , in 1957 , all those Party workers undergoing life imprisonment , were let off. So mercy petitions should not be rejected

SCARE AWAY STRAY DOGS Stray dog menace is really a problem in the villages. Some five dogs are always seen here in Chathakudam East End. Two of them have chosen our terrace as their home. Many people keep coloured water in transparent bottles in the entrance to their homes . The sight of the coloured water is said to scare these animals.

THE MONTH ENDS TOMORROW We like to forget this month because my wife fell ill . Mercifully , she has recovered now. My granddaughter Meghna comes today , to visit her . She is studying architecture in Bangalore and is half way through. Before building this house , I never bothered about pension. I felt that I am rich. We used to hire a taxi car ; now , I wait for half an hour for our bus to Chathakudam. I have no idea how much we spent this month. My daughters managed everything. Three lakhs was the fee for operation of wife’s stomach . Other expenses extra. At the time of retirement , balance in my Provident Fund was Ra. 400 only. I used to say to my friends :”My daughters are my assets. (at that time , we had no house)” Yes, they helped in building this house too.

LET YAKUB MEMON BE THE LAST –NO MORE DEATH PENALTY PLEASE Death penalty is a relic of the medieval past. People were unsympathetic and vengeful. Modern trend is to understand human behavior and understand the circumstances leading to murder. Murderer is not afraid of death. These days there are contract killers. People contact these quotation people to get their ‘enemy’ liquidated. Angry husband kill his wife’s lover. Let the court convict such people for life imprisonment. It is much more bitter than sudden death by hanging. Yakub’s agony is over. Ironically , another Muslim , Dr. Abdul Kalam , a venerated scientist , is also cremated the same day.

TEMPLE OF PARASHURAM

TEMPLE OF PARASHURAM According to legend , it was Parashuram , who cleared the forests (his weapon is the axe) and reclaimed the land of Keralam. There is only one temple in Thiruvananthapuram where the Deity of this hero is installed. Every year in Thulam month , there is a festival here with two caparisoned elephants and beating of drums . (normally the number of elephants is odd) Parashuram’s father suspected his wife Renuka, of infidelity and ordered his son to cut off her head. After faithfully complying with his orders , the father asked the son for a boon. He said:”Give me back my mother.” So Renuka became alive and Parashuram brought her to the new land of Keralam. The heroic fighter was the bitter enemy of Kshthriyas who ruled the countries of North India. (ironically , the two factions of the Indian National Congress , were led by Kamalapathy Tripathy (a Brahmin) and Kamanlal Gupta (a Kshatriya) . Similarly , Ravan was a Brahman and Ram a Kshathriya. Parashuram defeated Kshathiyas eighteen times in war . He had the Pashupthasthram , gifted by Lord Shiva.

Within seconds the fellow got down , as the horrified driver stopped the bus. The affected man also got down , holding his cheek with one hand. The travelers were saying , it is old rivalry

LAST DAYS OF THE MONTH Common people are penniless, these last few days. In my youth , I used to borrow money , though I was working as a UD clerk. This was because both my wife and myself , did not know how to run a house hold. I had to send money to my unemployed brother in Keralam. I used to take all sorts of advances, Like Festival advance . As soon as one advance is recovered , there will be another festival. Mercifully , I never had account in the grocery shop; all purchases were paid, down cash. Things improved when I got promotion . So, what I was going to say is , that I avoid going to sell books in houses , during these days. Today I went to Trichur Railway Station . Travelers are never short of money. I was lucky to sell some seven books!

TERROR ATTACK

EARLY MORNING TERROR ATTACK JOLTS MODI In the early morning hours , Pakistani terrorists crossed the border in Panjab and reached Gurudaspur , only 35 kilometres from the border. They planted bombs in the railway track , which was detected before explosion. Then they attacked a Police Station , killed the policemen and carried away weapons. By then the army reached and engaged them for twelve ours . One or two must have escaped . In all some ten terrorists are believed to be in the team. Border skirmishes have been going on during the last one month in the Chamb sector; so attacks are expected. The border in Panjab is fenced and guarded by Border Security Force . Anyone can cross it . In the morning hours , the jawans must be sleeping. Like in Kashmir , here too , the army must guard the line . Even then, terrorists can sneak in. Rajnath Singh , and Arun Jaitely , the Ministers concerned have been talking about ‘befitting reply’. Good sleep may be befitting in the circumstances . Will Narendra Modi wake up and attack Karachi Port?

SNAPS FROM MY LIFE-baby boy scared a big cat When we were in Rajasthan Atomic Power Project , our neighbor had a baby moving on hands and legs. It was quite big , black and strong. Seeing it coming towards himself , a big cat got scared and backed out and ran away!

ONE TIME PAYMENT OF HOUSE TAX We live in our own home . The Panchayath levies a tax for this house which is nominal. On 25th of July , I was summoned to Taluk office at Trichur to appear with documents of this house , like approved plan , possession certificate etc. There , I was asked to fill in a form. The supervisor did not even look at the certificates. He told me that I should pay a one time tax of Rs 2700 to the Panchayath. Why should I pay this extra tax? What will they do , if I do not pay? Can they evict me from my own house , which I built without any help from the Panchayath? I like to go to the Court ,if they harass me.

HUMANISM VS HANGING Forty members of Parliament have written to the President of India , urging him to reconsider the decision, to hang the terrorist this month . Hanging is a crude form of killing. ‘An eye for an eye’, is barbaric. When you cannot take your own life (suicide is punishable under the law) , how can one take the life of another human being? Even otherwise , life time inside the prison cell , is harder than hanging , which cuts short the agony . For voicing this sentiment , Salman Khan is being harassed by Shiva Sena and the BJP. Think coolly and raise your voice against the system of hanging.

SRISANTH IS FREE We are all happy that our rising star Srisanth is free. But there are questions still begging for answers. The BCCI has not acquitted him ; he will not be allowed to play. The IPL MATCH FIXING IS a mysterious thing , involving Lalith Modi , Davood Ibrahim etc. Sunanda Pushkar knew a lot; she wanted to tell the world and she was killed. The Police maintains that they will go to a higher Court, because the prosecution failed to present the case properly. Anyway , it will take a long time to conclude and Srisanth will not have to go to jail for a long time.

FALSE DEGREE CERTIFICATES House wife in Trichur , has given false certificates regarding qualification of candidates , seeking job , mostly in Gulf countries. Police raided her house and confiscated documents in this connection. It is well known that in Bihar , one can get Engineering degree , without attending college. But here in the South , this is the first instance of this kind. This is the reason why Indian degrees are not recognized in the United Sates

HEART TRANSPLANT For the first time in Keralam , the heart of a person killed in accident , has been successfully fixed inn the body of a patient. The heart was transported to Kochi in record time . The operation took five hours . It will take another few days to confirm that it is successful. Let us all pray for the patient!

HOW THEY FOUGHT THE DESERT Northern parts of Eastern Europe became a desert. The villagers became virtual beggars . Some of them decided to rear cattle. Grass could easily grow , by sprinkling water from the streams . When cattle move about , they fertilize the soil by their droppings. In due course , small shrubs began to grow . Rains began to drop and even small trees appeared in due course. By selling milk and milk products in towns , the villagers began to become rich. Seeing this , other villagers joined them. Now almost the whole area has become green. In India also, desertification can be fought this way.

CLIMATE

CLIMATE It is well known that the tall Himalayas protect us from the icy cold wind coming from the North Pole. Why is the wind from the South Pole unable to reach India? Here , it is a different story. Because of the position of the Sun , whose rays fall vertically in the equatorial region, the water from the ocean produces huge quantities of vapour which rise to the skies. The wind from both poles meet at this region and help this upward flow. As the clouds rise , they precipitate as rains. All the year round , there is rain here . There is thick growth of forest and the temperature is humid . Continuous rain cools the atmosphere.

Even during extremely heated debate , they do not rush into the well , or disrupt the proceedings in any way. And here? The BJP CONTINUOUSLY SHOUTED AND DID NOT ALLOW THE House to run during Congress rule . Now the latter are paying in the same coin. In the process , a lot of linen is being washed in the public. SNAPS FROM MY LIFE-lady line man When the calling bell rang , I came out and saw a young , beautiful lady , dressed in sari:”Is it Radha’s home?” “Yes” “Are you Subramanian?” “Yes” Then she proceeded to take the meter reading and gave me the electricity bill. Then only I realized that she is a line man. Normally we never used to see them . We got the bill , that is all.

CHILD LABOUR

CHILD LABOUR Universal education is a lofty ideal ; the reality is that a sizable section of our population eke out an existence blow poverty level . Their children have to work more than twelve hours , to contribute to the family expenses. Ensure steady job for their parents and then give money for the children’s education. CAN WE DO IT? Yes; cut defence expenditure and start building roads , bridges, railways and stadium for games etc.

SNAPS FROM MY LIFE-Onion (sabola) vada I was returning from my trip in the morning , selling books. It was raining continuously and I was hungry. Being Sunday , tea shops were closed. I saw a shop where something was being fried. I got in and asked for it. The woman said it is sabola vada. It is onions dipped in bason and fried like vada. I ordered one . It was quite hot and crisp. My body became alive . I thanked the lady!

DETECTION OF CANCER My wife was suffering from cancer , for the last two years. She was admitted in Mother Hospital, Trichur , for complaints of her stomach and subjected to a number of tests , including whole body scanning , but doctors failed to detect cancer. Early detection of this disease is useful for containing the damage to the system. Why did they not do tests specific to cancer? She is seventy two years old.

JACK FRUIT

JACK FRUITS WORTH 28 THOUSAND CRORES , WASTED It is estimated that jack fruits worth twenty eight thousand crores , are wasted every year , because we do not know what to do with these delicious fruits. The Government should wake up to this criminal negligence and find out suitable methods of canning ripe fruits. Mature , unripe kernels can be fried and kept in air tight polythene bags. Even the hard seeds can be used to make dry dishes , which can be eaten by diabetic persons too. Only in the season , the tree gives fruits. In the rainy season, they get spoilt in a few days. Government must procure fruits with suitable remunerative prices and send it to factories , for further processing. Like cashew factories , proprietors can make good profit

TODAY (17-7-`15) IS THE FIRST OF KARKIDAKAM The holy month of Karkitakam begins today. In temples , Ramayanam is recited every day. As usual , I went to Guruvayoor. When I approached the Manager for special permit to enter the temple , he told me to come at ten. It was only nine and I wondered what I should do till then. Luckily , I had some copies of my book and I could easily earn three hundred rupees. After darshan , I had free meal and then I came back to see my wife in the ICU. She was fast asleep . She looked quite well . The Doctor said she may be discharged from intensive care tomorrow and kept in the ward. On my return , I was completely drenched in the rain, which continued till five in the evening

ORDINANCE RAJ QUESTIONED BY THE COURT Modi Government is in a fix over the ordinance on buying of land by the Government . Twicem ,the law was kept alive by issuing fresh ordinance. Now the supreme court has given the opinion that it must be passed by Parliament and the route of ordinance must be avoided.. . Even the allies of the ruling party are opposed to this law

A MARRIAGE

A MARRIAGE From Ashvini Hospital , where I had gone to visit my wife , I spent some time selling books . It was eleven O clock and I decided t return home. I had decided to sell some books at Vaidyarathnam Corporate off ice and luckily , there was a bus passing that way. I told my relative Mallika about my mission and she said immediately:” Today is Sasi’s son’s marriage; are you not going there?” “Oh! I forgot . Thank you for reminding me.” I got out and , luckily , an auto was passing by m I hailed it and reached the Parvathy marriage hall at Edakunni in fifteen minutes. The marriage was over , The last batch was sitting for the feast. I saw Soya and told her about my wife’s operation. After wards , I went up to see the newly married couple. The photographer was busy. Soya told him to take my photo with the couple on either side . So a record of my visit is now available. Sasi’s son who is in America, was seeing me after a number of years. Afterwards , I went to my mother’s house at Naruvakulangarsa , along with Soya , and participated in ‘kudiveppu’, reception of the bride . It was here that I lived while studying in St. Thomas College. Soya and Sasi (the first child Mohanan is no more) were small then.

WIFE HOSPITALISED

WIFE HOSPITALISED My wife has been complaining about her stomach trouble, for the past one year. The doctors in Mother Hospital , Trichur failed to correctly diagnose the cause of the illness . At the suggestion of my daughter-in-law , she was referred to Ashwini Hospital near Trichur North bus stand , where , after extensive tests , it was found that her stomach is being eaten away by ulcer . Tomorrow , is the surgery. My daughter Leena has come from Delhi and is with her mother. Let us all pray for her health!

MOHINIYATTAM

MOHINIYATTAM (DANCE OF THE ENCHANTRESS) According to researchers , this form of dance was being performed in the old Mysore State, by ‘devdasis’s. They are supposed to be the wives of the deity of the temple. In practice , they are patronized by the feudal lords. Some thousand years ago , they came to Kerala and taught our girls this mohiniyattam. Here , it was pure art , and the artists were respected in society. Anyone who watches this seductive dance , is bound to retain its fragrance , for a long time. According to mythology , Vishnu assumed the guise of Mohini and enticed Shiva. Lord Ayyappa was born and left in the forest , where the boy grew up among tigers , playing with the cubs.

INDIA AND PAKISTAN ARE BROTHERS

NARENDRA MODI IS FRIENDLY WITH PAKISTAN When our Prime Minister met his Pakistani counterpart recently , the discussed for half an hour , ways to improve mutual relations. This a welcome step. I always maintained that our neighbor is not an enemy , but we are brothers. That country was born in blood and became a Muslim State, feudal , always under military control. It is not industrialized. The US accepted military treaty with it and it survives only with arms aid from that country. At the time of partition , there was East Pakistan, now Bangladesh . Indira Gandhi helped freedom fighters there and sent our army , to overthrow the regime. The whole Pakistani army surrendered. A secular Republic was born. In the same way , we must help secular forces there, by overthrowing the Military regime. The whole country is ruled by IS and the people will welcome liberation. For some time , it can be a UN protectorate.

KAKANAD

KAKANAD The Civil Station here , is most inconvenient to visit. After getting down from the bus , one has to walk around the office wall , built high , as around a jail . I am inclined to hire an auto , but there is no auto stand. (Our Collectorate at Trichur , is most comfortable. The bus stops very near and there is auto stand there itself) My preference for Kakanad is that there is scope to sell as many books as I can carry. Yesterday , I earned one thousand rupees and the first three flours could not be covered as my bag became empty. I am told that there are any number of offices in the ‘Smart city’. So far I could not locate where it is. There is a local train for Ernakulam leaving Ollur at 8AM. Now it is funny that for Ernakulam North , it is still fifteen rupees only , but for South , it is twenty! I had been to a college near South Station , but unable to locate it now. Yesterday I paid Rs forty to the prepaid auto and he took me to another college in the Market. As it was ten , the classes had begun ; so I went to the attached School , where I easily sold five books. When I left the room and reached the gate , a lady came running for a book. “Sir, would you like to have tea?” I declined but the gesture enlivened my heart! It was then, that I went to Kakanad

DOGS MAY BE KILLED

MAN IS MORE PRECIOUS THAN DOG Kerala Government has now decided that dogs can be killed , because human life is more precious. This is wise. TWO DOGS ARE SPENDING THEIR NIGHT IN MY TERRACE. We do not know how to get rid of them. But hour Government is so foolish that it is decided to sterilize the dogs of the land!

PARAMEKAVU COLLEGE

I used to go to colleges for selling books. The Pramekavu college at Trichur is different. The Principal refuses to sell books there. I may gust stand outside and contact only those who come outside. Even then , Several students bought books. I wonder whether the Management is aware of this attitude.

SCHOOL TEXT BOOKS I AM ASHAMED OF WRITING THIS PIECE ABOUT KERALAM Schools reopen on the first of June, every year. This year , the text books are still being printed This like a marriage Party ; all gusts have arrived but the contract for supply of food is still not finalized. How do such things happen? There is a Minister for education. What about the Secretary for this Department? Every day the Malayalam TV channels are busy discussing it. Now they say printing is over and distribution will be completed in a week.

A RAINY DAY

A RAINY DAY It being the peak of rainy season , I used to carry a small umbrella . When I left home , the sky was clear and the Sun beat me hard. When I was in the bus , it began to rain . Torrents of water drenched the bus. When the bus halted at Ollur , I stood in front of a hotel , for some ten minutes . Then I walked some distance to the stop for the buses going towards Cochin. Before I reached the shelter , it became heavy rain. Somehow , I managed to rteach the shelter and waited. In the bus also rains were heavy. My aim was Higher Secondary School at Varanthirappilly , on the way to the Eastern Ghats. Some distance I walked quickly , with my bag protecting my head. Some consolation , when I reached the School building. The teachers behaved as if they were expecting me . As the classes were to start only after half an hour , I sold twenty books and thanked them. I went to a Bank and then the Panchayath office at Alagappanagar. By the time I sold all the books , It was noon time and I wanted to return home . To board the bus towards Ollur , I had to cross the road , The bus stop was some ten yards away and I was too tired to walk . So I got into the bus going to Pudukkad . That was the mistake . I waited till one and there was no sign of the bus for Urakam . I had to shell out seventy rupees to the autowalla. The lesson: always carry the umbrella

PRANAYAM

PRANAYAM (LOVE) Pranayam is the title of the film , which was pilfered and pirate CDs sold in the market , even before the first show was screened in the theatre. This has shocked its producer and director. Mammutty has strongly condemned it. Government has ordered an enquiry. How will the loss be compensated? Is there any insurance against piracy?

ANNAMANADA

ANNAMANADA It is just a name to me. Yesterday I went to Mala to sell books and returned via Annmana . My great surprise was the bus stand there. All bus stands are congested. Here , the ground is very spacious and there are only one or two buses. As soon as a bus comes , all people for the destination , marked in bold letters at some different places , get in and the bus starts. Aluva, Angamali, Koratti , Chalakudi are some of the destinations . The fare for Chalakudidi is only ten rupees and so I came back by this Station and got KSRTC bus.

The prices have gone up , but the Government will not surrender to the dictates of International Capital. This is the first time , a nation has broken away from Global Capital. India has to watch the developments. We too may be forced to follow the example of Greece In spite of all efforts of Prime Minister Modi , we have not received investments from abroad.

IS KASARGOD FORT IN PRIVATE HANDS? Unlike in old Cochin State , the whole of Malabar was captured by the British and so all forts in that area are under Government control.
