RELIGION
From AD 476 to 1000, Europe remained under darkness,
intellectual activity suppressed by religious bigotry. During this period,
Christianity spread all over the continent. People were taught to read the
bible and compelled to go to the Church. Freedom of thought and expression were
denied. Galileo was jailed, for suggesting that the earth is round! This era is
known as the ‘dark age.’
In the ninth century, Mohammad preached another religion,
which believed in destroying all books except Koran . When they conquered
Constantinople, scholars ran away carrying precious books, leaving gold behind.
Gold can be earned again, but the thoughts embodied in the books, cannot be
revived by another person.
Subsequent period saw a merciless fight between Christians
and Muslims, which has become deadly and pernicious now. So far, India was free
from religious frenzy, but now, Hindutwadis are busy awakening religious
sentiments.
Marx said religion is opium of the mind. How true !
