VALLACHIRA BHARANI

Every year, our village of Vallachira celebrates the Bharani festival, at the Kali temple on the bank of the big temple pond, with great enthusiasm.

Bharani nakshatram in the Malayalam month of Kumbham, which falls on 23-3-2015 this year, is the occasion. Elephants, drum beating, fire works etc. are normal. There is kavidiyattam too. Local TV channels do relay the programs live.
A poor (emranthiri) Brahman from north Kerala came here long ago and did his services so thoroughly and with great devotion that Kali (Bhadrakali) was pleased and blessed him. He became very rich afterwards and renovated the temple pond and surroundings with his earnings. He lived beyond ninety years and continued to visit the temple on his bicycle, purchased when he first started work here, even after he relinquished the post of poojary and his sons owned their own hotels and car. At the railway crossing, when the gates were closed, he would lift the cycle and cross it, people say. He was so healthy and strong.
Bharani festival is celebrated in different Kali temples in different months, Kodungallur Bharani being the most famous. It comes next month.
