DO NOT GO NEAR ELEPHANTS

This is pooram festival season. You may find elephants on the road, at the festival site and tethered in private plots and temples. (with or without any chain; parked would be a better term, but it has to be near a tree, peepul trees being available in temples.)

At Peruvanam temple there was an elephant. An old woman, Pottele Parvathy who used to go regularly there, wanted to give the elephant who represents Ganeshji, some leave of the sacred tree. When she came near the elephant, she was pulled by the animal and killed. This happened several years ago.
Yesterday a young man, a boy rather, held the tusk of an elephant. These animals are very sensitive about their tusks, which they use as spears. He was killed for his audacity !
During festivals we all give them eatables like plantain, coconuts and sweet appam etc. which they enjoy; but only when the mahouts allow.
When in good mood they like our company. But these animals are very unpredictable and easily angered.
Every year, a number of people die of snake bites or get killed by elephants.
