BRITISH RULE IN INDIA
Portuguese and the French established their empire in parts of India by armed might . The British , who came late , presented gifts to the Mughal Emperor and got permission to build ware houses at Surat.
At that time there was complete lawlessness in North India . The large army had almost disappeared and the soldiers made a living by looting the merchants . The presence of British army was a relif to the merchants . Modern arms with the British helped them in maintaining law and order.
In due course , their empire covered the whole subcontinent . British Collectors were appointed in all districts , who were honest and were not influenced by local men.
Schools , postal and telegraph net work , survey of the whole land etc were their achievements . From a conglomeration of feudal Kings , India became a modern State , with the largest voluntary volunteer army , supervised by British Officers . It was this army that fought the Japanese in World War 2.
Indians were trained in administration. The result is that when power was transferred to us on 15-8-1947, India was a modern state.
The same day Japan formally surrendered to the Americans
