CHINA
GUNBOAT DIPLOMACY
The Western capitalist countries wanted to conquer the whole
world. They did succeed. By the end of the nineteenth century , the whole world
became colonies of England, Spain, France, Portugal etc.
England expanded to the East. India, Burma, Malaya etc. were
easily conquered, but China was a different story. Its vastness and the figting
quality of the people , became the main stumbling blocks. So the powerful, well
armed navy was used to shell the coastal towns of Shanghai, Honkong etc. The Emperor
of China had to come back and agree to hand over several areas to Briton. Hence
the term ‘gunboat diplomacy’
Industry introduced a new class of people-the working class.
The International Communist Movement (Comitern)struck
roots in Chinese soil, under the leadership of a great genus-Mao Tse Tung. This
part, we shall come later, under the caption ’The great march’
