GEOGRATHY-VINDHYA
The two mountain ranges, Vindhy and Satpura, divide the country into two- the
North Indian plains and the peninsular India of mountains, along the 23rd
parallel. The north is plain country, the great Gangetic plains which produce
food grains for the whole country.
The southern high land is full of forests and wild life,
where hunting was the main occupation of the tribal people. This area is bound by Vindhya ranges in the
north, Western Ghats in the west and Eastern Ghats, at an angle from Nilgiri to
Orissa, enclosing the great Deccan plateau
Two great rivers, Narmada and Tapty flow along the valley of
the mountain ranges. These fall in the
Arabian sea, near Surat. Recently, great dam was constructed , to harness the
waters of Narmada, giving plenty of water to the thirsty fields of Gujarath.
Historically, Narmada is very holy and ancient. The Gangetic
plains rose from the sea, at a later date.
The main crop of the south is cotton, the black soil being
favorable for this . People near the sea shore, are engaged in fishing. Almost
all ports are in the south. This are is rich in minerals like diamonds, gold
etc.
