HISTORY-THE FALL OF MUGHAL DYNASTY
The East India Company
came to India, to do trade. At that time, they had no intention of acquiring
territory.
Their representative met the Emperor, in Delhi fort,
presented gifts and requested for permission to make a where house at Surat. This
was agreed. At that time there was no central Government, as the writ of the
Emperor did not extend beyond the fort in old Delhi. Robbers and ruffians had
harassed the merchants, who were compelled to move in a convoy. From Surat ,
they had to take the protection of African sailors, to take the ships to Egypt,
where European merchants were waiting
for them. All this changed, when the Company established
sway , all over the North. The business community whole heartedly supported the
British Raj.
The revolt of displaced and discredited feudal Rulers of
North India, in 1856, was not supported by the common people, who welcomed law
and order and security.
