HISTORY-SPARTA
Greece is in two parts-the upper part is contiguous with
Europe, while the lower half is like an island, connected to the main Greece,
by a small, very narrow stretch of land, which was only a mile, or so, long.
Athens is in the north and Sparta in the south. These two
States (other areas were forest) were at loggerheads at each other. Athens
stood for liberalism. Thinkers like Socrates and Plato belong to Athens. The
famous Greek Tragedy (dramas) were enacted in Athens. Marathon run began here. Alexander the Great, was born
in Macedonia in the north.
Poor Sparta was the very opposite of Athens. People led a
very frugal, simple life. The phrase ‘Spartan habits ‘ means this. They had
only one aim in life- military training. To die for the country was the only
aim in life. There was a big battle between Athens and Sparta. All Spartans
died fighting.
