TEMPLE WALLS

TEMPLE WALLS
All temples have strong, thick walls. In Peruvanam temple, there are two temples-one is eratteppan, the other is madathilappan, which is tall and the building has three stories. Between the two, is a huge structure made of granite. This must be the  khajanavu or treasure store; in olden times, money was in the form of gold coins and this has to be protected well.
This is the reason why, all temples have been fortified by thick walls. The temple at Veraval in Gujarath, was attacked several times for looting the treasure.

The Palaces too have walls, for the same reason Theft was the main occupation of unemployed men, who have no land or work like that of ironsmith etc. Regular policing and the system of Justice and jails came later, during British rule
