DRY LATRINES FOR RURAL INDIA AND SLUMS IN URBAN AREAS

In the vast hinterland of rural Indian subcontinent, where there is shortage of water, we must think of disposal ofhuman excreta, without water.

Here people live in clusters of huts and go out to defaecate in the fields.
A high latrine complex can be made with stones or bricks, according to availability. Men and women may sit in separate enclosures, over holes made in a platform. The excreta will be allowed to flow through slanting pipes and collected in a shallow pan.
Natural oxidation and sunlight will turn it into dry compost, which can be used as very fertile manure.
If the latrine is at least 15 feet high, foul smell will be carried away by natural air. Sunlight will destroy bacteria and the dry manure can be handled safely.
Slums in urban areas too can have this facility.
