MY LIFE – HEAVY WATER PROJECT

For running the atomic reactor, which provides the heat for producing steam for the turbine, heavy water is required. When uranium oxide pellets are immersed in heavy water, thermo nuclear reaction starts.

Hydrogen has an isotope called deuterium, with a proton,  an electron and a neutron. Chemists call it Deuterium, we call it heavy hydrogen, which combines with oxygen to form heavy water, a naturally existing molecule, having all the chemical and physical properties of water, and is essential for running the reactors. Naturally occurring heavy water, D2O, is separated by centrifugal force.
So, a Heavy Water Project was also coming up adjacent to the RAPP site, and they have a residential colony at Rawatbhata, separated from our colony by the high way from Kota to Gandhisagar dam.
When the mud house we were occupying, developed cracks, owing to continued rains, we were allotted a quarter in the Heavy Water colony, a terrace house.
Leena was going to the school, in a temporary building, near  to our mud house and now she had to cross the high way, unlike the elder children, whose school was in Heavy Watercolony. Only once did I accompany her to her school, even though she was just four years old only, explaining to her to look both left and right, before crossing the road. Today parents are over- conscious and accompany their wards, even when the school bus comes in front of their house! Our children were His, now parents possess them,  as if they only are responsible for their children’s safety!
During this time, when we were happily living in a terrace house, with two bed rooms, my sister Savithry and her family came to spend the vacation there.
I escorted them when they went to Ajmer, Pushkar, Jaipur, Delhi and Varanasi. My wife remained at home, I don’t remember why, but Sudhir accompanied us, in this tour. In Delhi, Anil, Pindali Devasena oppol’s son, arranged  a glider flight for us. It was an experience never to be forgotten, though we had to stand in the hot sun for a long time. Only one can sit in the glider, just a mall boat with wings, all wooden and open, which is pulled by an iron rope that  is detached  when the glider is sufficiently high. Then onwards, we fly like a bird in the sky! There is nothing which I love more than flying, highier and highier, to view the earth and learn geography of the locality! Why do we not have the facility of balloon flight in Delhi? Here they want only to eat and drink! I am in search of some one who would like to use his brains, not for making money, but for answering philosophical questions, pestering thinkers from time imemmorial.
Anil told me, they can fly from Delhi to Kanpur this way, by gliding, if weather conditions are favourable.
It was an interesting tour and I shall give a detailed account of it at some other time.
