BOOK REVIEW-TWO YEARS BEFORE THE MAST

A young man in the United States was advised by doctors to remain in the sea for six months, for reasons of health. So he arranged with the captain of the ship to be his host. He wrote down every thing he saw, in a diary written more than two centuries ago. Today it is a classic!

Those were the days of sailing ships. There was no Panama canal. The ship was carrying shoes manufactured in New York, meant for sale in California. On its return journey, it brought the raw materials, namely, the hides of animals.
I SHALL RECOUNT SOME INTERESTING OBSERVATIONS.
The sailors are trained to attend to their sails, within minutes, once the order is given by the captain, who is a dictator on board the ship. There will be a nubmer of sails in a big ship, which moves suddenly afterwards. If the wind is strong, the ship flies fast, with its bow rising majestically above the water; however, in the absence of any favourable wind, the ship remains glued to the water!
If there is no work, the sailors will be asked to move things here and there, lest they become lazy.
A number of cattle are carried in the ship, as food. In the absence of vegetables, the people suffer from scurvy, a vitamin C dificiency symptom.
When they reach south America in December, there is extreme heat, as it is summer in the southern hemisphere!
They visit an island off the coast of south America, where those found guilty of murder etc. are exiled. No one is allowed to carry knives while visiting the island.
In two years, the ship returns to New York. Hence the title of the book.
