A very young girl was thrilled to see the glorious Sun just rising in the East. She had a blessing that her wish will be fulfilled, whoever be the person she desired!
Before she realized it, God Soorya appeared before her and embraced her…..
She was embarrassed to see that she had become pregnant without marriage. So she placed the new born baby in a raft and floated it down the river.
A woman saw the baby coming in the raft and took it home. She had no issues. She was the wife of a horse cart driver and the boy was called Soothaputhr (son of cart driver)
He was gifted with extraordinary skill in archery. At that time, Dronacharya, a Brahman, was coaching the royal family princes in the use of weapons. He was very poor and was sitting by a well, when the boys were playing there. Their ring fell into the well and they sought the help of the man. He made an arrow of grass and shot it into the well, in such a way that it came back, after passing through the ring!
They invited him into the palace and described about it. That is how he became their Guru.
He taught Soothaputhr too, taking him to be a Brahman boy. One day he was sleeping in the lap of the Guru, when an insect crawled into the boy’s thigh and started piercing into the flesh. He suffered in silence, lest the Guru may wake up.
When he woke up and learned what had happened, he cursed the boy: “I am sure you are not a Brahman. We do not have such power of endurance. You will forget the mantras, when needed in war.
In those days the mantras gave power to the arrow and Soothaputhr was handicapped by the curse.
When the prices grew up, something like a tournament was held to exhibit the skills they learned. Suyodhan and Soothaputhr had become friends and he wanted his friend to participate in the function. When objected, because he had no kingdom, Suyodhan gave him land and declared that he is the king of the land. Thus Soothaputhr became Karn (mispronounced in the North as Karan)
The friendship between the two is unrivalled in the world of epics. In the tournament, Kunthy, Karna’s mother, recognized her son. She felt pride and affection for the young boy, who had the brilliance of his father the Sun, who had covered his body with an invisible shield, to protect his life. Had Kunthy owned up her son, there would be no war.
Kunthy’s husband Pandu had a curse that if he touched a woman, he would die. Pandu.s other wife Madry went with her into the forest to enjoy the night in the moon light. Overcome by sex urge, he forgot the curse and died. So Kunthy gave Madry the secret charm. Thus Pandu’s children were fathered by different Gods.
Yudhishtyr by Yama
Bhim by Vayu
Arjun by Indra
All Kunty’s children
Nakul and Sahadev were children of Ashwini twins born to Madry.
Kunty was unashamedly partial to Arjun, favourite of all except Suyodhan who hated the Pandavas, as Pandu’s children are known.
To win the war Karn must be eliminated. So Kunthy secretly approached Karn and asked for the invisible shield.
Karn: “Ma, you will have five children, whether Arjun dies or I”
So, ARJUN’S FATHER CAME IN THE GUISE OF A Brahman and asked for the shield; Karn gave it because, he gave anything asked for.
In the war, Karna’s chariot got stuck in the mud. While trying to extricate it, Arjun hesitated, when Krishn said: “Why are you delaying? You won’t get another chance. Shoot him.”
So Arjun sent the arrow at unarmed Karn and killed him- an act unbecoming of a warrior.
Yet, Mahabharath war is called DHARMAYUDH- Awar to establish DHARMA
