For unemployed educated people, a job is a must. So I went to Bombay where my uncle lived.
He is living in a small room, in which he took some six lodgers, who paid monthly rent, thus augmenting his income. As I could not give any money, he gave me many addresses and I contacted all of them. At last, a laundry gave me th job of keeping accounts and also any other work he gave me. I obediently did all his biddings and so he was pleased with me.
“Where do you live?”, he asked me. When I told him him about my uncle, he allowed me to use the verand of the office and I was really pleased.
After one month, I sent Rs. 100 to my mother, who, along with my sister, lived in Keralam. I was not satisfied with my work and went on giving my bio-data to various companies like Glaxo Laborataries etc., with no result. A ldy who used to come there took pity on me and offered to pay me one thousand if I gave tuition in her tutorial.
After getting my first pay, I sent five hundred and my sister wrote me a letter of thanks, in which she also mentioned about some marriage proposal they have received. Wrote back, telling her to go ahead, as I have just joined a new place and am not in a position to come home, a t least fore one year. The marriage went off well and I got a chance to hope for my own partner. There were many girls, studying for BA also, some very beautiful. But I have to get the amount They gave my sister. There were other liabilities also. So my dream girl remained a wish only.
As the number of pupils increased, income from fees too went up. My lady gave me more money, but I looked forward for a job in a better place. So when a letter came from the Department of Defence, my heart flutterd. A Punjab girl, very rich and smart, who used to talk to me ,whenever she got a chance, saw it and immediately took a photocopy of the order, and showed it to her father, she told me. “I too will come to Delhi, my brother is there.” She said
“I shall , travel in the crowded second class compartment, will you dare to?”, “I shall come to the very hell, if it is with you”, she retorted . But, when I talked to her, my impression changed . She told me there are many Malayalee nurses in Punjab and she liked them. Both of our States are known for hard working people. That is why w are liked. You are handsome and I loved you at first sight. I told this to my father and he has no objection. She asked me about my family and I told my life story till w met.
She took me to her brother’s house. He talked to some MP and I got a living room in the MP’s out house, free. Thus, she proved her worth. My office is in RK puram. Her brother took us there in his car. It is an imposing multi-story building. She dismissed her brother and waited in the lobby. I went in and saw the receptionist, who directed me to my office room. The officer in charge saw my order and told me to give a joining report. I told him that I have just come and wanted to go and find some accommodation. So he asked me to sign in the attendance register and then go. All this took some one hour. Then I joined my friend and we went to my residence in a taxi. She stayed there for the night and we shared the same bed. She helped me to set up my house and went back to her father. She gave me a mobile and taught me how to use it.
So far so good; but what will my mother say? I wrote her a detailed letter, but did not mention about my friend.
I had to go to Trivandrum on official duty and I told her to accompany me. We both went by Kerala express. It was her first travel to Kerlam and she was very excited. Our fellow passengers treated us as married couple. as her hands were always encircling me. In the night, after midnight, she shared my birth.
While in Trivandrum. I took two day’s casual leave and we went to see my mother. She told her in Malayalam “vanakkam” and touched her feet. I explained that she wanted to marry me, if she permitted. She thought and then said:”, nowadays, it is common. I have no objection.” When I explained this in English, she embraced my mother and wept . “Tell her I am obliged to her all my life.” She told her father also. “Mother, what will you do here alone. We can sell this house and buy a flat in Delhi.”
She agreed
