Why do women get so excited about marriage?
Sometimes women are unhappy if they have no daughter. This may be some peculiarity of women of the Indian subcontinent. I do not know of others.
Even as a girl, they enjoy taking care of the Barbie doll. This love is transferred to the daughter. In Bengal, children play marriage games of dolls.
I feel that if there are no shops selling cloths and jewelry, and no TV serials, our ladies will not know how to spend their time!
First, they are worried about their daughter’s marriage. As if, the only aim of womanhood is marriage. This is astonishing because they are losing their freedom in life. Or, are they secretly hoping to enslave their future husbands for their money which they can spend on cloths and ornaments? When we go on tour, women will feel disappointed if there is no scope for shopping.
Jayalalithaa is not satisfied with five hundred pairs of foot wear. Every lady of consequence will have a store of saries which they cannot wear in their life time.
I have read about a princess of France, who carried a caravan of wagons containing cloths, in her maiden voyage to her husband’s palace. In one novel, the girl discourages her millionaire suitor, saying she would enjoy making him a pauper by spending his fortune on shopping!
I am talking about arranged marriages. Lovers can legitimately get excited about marriage. Oh! No. These days they enjoy several ‘first nights’, even before marriage!
