PANCHAYATH ELECTION

PANCHAYATH ELECTION

He is now popularly known as PMN, Panchayath Member Narayanan.
Previously he was PMN, Post Man Nararayanasn. I have seen him and we used to exchange a few words. Later, they told me he is a learned man, though he studied only up to sventh. He would read everything that comes in his hand. He used to take books from the library at Arattupuzha, of which I am the Patron. A Namboodiri family migrated to Bombay, after selling the ancestral home; all the books in his home library, he donated to our library. There are English books also. PMN could read that also, as English was taught in primary classes too.
One day, a young girl came to our library. Though a separate librarian is there, I used to go there almost every day, to read papers.
She was good looking and reminded me of PMN. We liked each other;”Who are you?” “I am PMN’s daughter,” was the reply. I knew about PMN from her.
“When is he retiring from service?”
“Next year in February.”
Panchayath elections are due in April; I think PMN should be our candidate. We do not have scholars in the Panchayath.”
“I knew it, but did not like to project my father.” “What is your qualification. What are you doing now?” “My mother is running a press. I am helping her. Of course, we have separate staff.”
I talked to my friends and they all supported me. We formed a team and began propaganda, without waiting for declaration of election date. We used to go house to house and also held public meetings, when she sang well and received applause from the audience.
During this period, I asked Vasantha, who had become very close to me:”Will you marry me?” “You are backward class; I do not know whether my mother will agree. If we win the election, her attitude will become soft.”
“You are an intelligent girl. I did not go so far.” The results of the election surprised all; PMN won by overwhelming majority.
I married my girl, in August, at Arattupuzha Temple.
