PLATELETS
In addition to the RBS, the blood contains platelets. These
are like rafts in a river; their function is to block the flow of blood, say,
after an accident. In some children, there are no platelets; they are likely to
die. Too many platelets can block the flow of blood. If blockage happens I the
vessels supplying blood to the muscles of the heart, an attack takes place. If
blockage is in the brain, paralysis is the result. In such cases, a by-pass
surgery is necessary, in the same way as a by-pass road is made.
According to some doctors, too much insulin in the blood can
cause too many platelets in the blood.
SERUM
The liquid in the blood is called serum. There are parallel
vessels in the body, carrying the serum. This is called the lymphatic system.
It contains White Blood Corpuscles, which is the army fighting the germs
causing infections. Both RBC and WBC are produced in the liver and the bone
marrow. Bone is not dead thing. It is hollow and filled with cells specialized in
making blood corpuscles. In old age, these cells decay and the body suffers.
BREAKAGE OF BONES AND LESS BLOOD CORPUSCLES RESULT. Old people also, like
children, need extra milk and eggs.
Cells
Initially, there is a single cell . It goes on multiplying
and millions of cells are formed, all alike. These are called stem cells . It
may be used for making organs and even a duplicate sheep called ‘clone’. Many
thinkers believe it unethical to
encroach in God’s domain.
After a month or so, we find three different types of cells.
One section becomes bone tissue, another on yields muscles and the third
section develops into the brain.
These will be discussed in the next issues.
