GANGETIC PLAINS
Between the Himalayas and the Vindhya Parvath , lies the
great Gangetic plains. Here you will not find a single stone, however deep you
may dig. The whole plain is level ground, like the sea water. The soil is
called alluvial soil, formed by the flow of water from the hills, rendering it
extremely fertile.
Wheat, sugarcane, potato etc. grow in abundance.
National Highway No. one, beginning in Peshawar in Pakistan
and ending in Calcutta, runs through this plain. As stones are not available,
the roads are laid by bricks. The road and surrounding land lie in the same
plain level; so the roads can be built in straight line, without embankments.
Compare with our roads in Keralam !
The river Gaga itself
is a great waterway. Ships and boats ply round the clock. The number of trains
is legion. The airspace is busy with airplanes.
Great cities like Delhi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Kashi and Patna lie
here.
History begins here. All people talk of the Himalayas. The
Gangetic plains are equally imposing. Travel through the Ganga and see it for
yourself
Rudyard Kipling has written a beautiful description of the
High way, as it was, two hundred years ago. The horse carts were the main
vehicles. There were resting places (sarais ) for passengers to rest and eat.
