It is a most inhuman tragedy for Keralites, reminiscent of Jalianwala Bagh of Panjab, little known outside the State. I was reminded of it by Surya TV channel.
Following a call by Mahatma Gandhi, Muslims of Malabar region, rose in revolt against the British Government, which soon turned into a communal riot. The landlords were Hindus and Muslims peasants took the opportunity, to loot and kill their landlords.
The region was directly under British rule. Confronted with a situation running out of control, the rioters were deported in trains, motor transport being not available or handy, and a wagon was filled with people and closed at Tirur, to be opened at Palakad railway station, when it was found that many of them were dead by suffocation and dehydration.
I will not blame the British Collector. Had they not taken prompt action, it would have been worse carnage. Many namboodiri families fled and escaped to Cochin State.
Gandhi failed to give proper direction, as he failed in the August 1942 revolution. Some fools threw the letter box, provided by the Post office, into the river, during August Kranty!
