Mahakavi Kalidas is the greatest poet ever, in the world. Shakespeare is well known because he wrote in English. In sheer poetic charm, Kalidas is unrivalled. “upama kalidasasya” (Kalidas’s simimilies are unparelled)
What I admire in Shakespeare, is his observation of human nature and brevity of words.
“Rose, by any other name, is as sweet”.
“The sweet sorrow of parting”-we cannot explain the feelings of the lovers or the context, even in one paragraph!
His advice to Polonius, in Hamlet, is for all the world to heed:”Neither be a borrower, nor a lender”
“All the world is a drama” is quoted by all. He was a close observer I people and a philosopher. His plays are enacted even now in a London theatre ,all days of the year I highly respect him.
Speech of Mark Antony, is a piece wort reading.
I cannot say much about Kalidas, because I do not know Samskrutham, a sad fact.
According to legend, he was an idiot. HE waited at the door of Devy in the temole at Ujjain and she blessed him and wrote “hari-shree” on his tongue. He became well versed in language and a gifted poet
About his Shakunthalam, a drama, I have written a blog, you may search it.
The eighth chapter of his Kumarasambhavam, about the birth of Subrahmanian, is pure pornography. The teacher is shy of explaining its meaning in Malayalam, telling them, just to read it. One instance I remember to have heard from my brother, wo is weelversed in the language: Parvthy’s breasts were smeared with vibhoothy, implying that Shiva had embraced her..
His end came at the hands of a prostitute.
The King wrote a half stanza:”A flower inside another, neither heard no seen:”
The poet completed it:”Lady, your eyes are flowers in your lotus like flower”
She killed him and claimed the money offered. Of course, The discovered her perjury and sent her to the gallows. But India lost a gem.
