DEAR WATERFRIEND

Dear friend,
If you love water we are water-friends. Through this website (yet to be designed) I hope to reach out to all our water-friends spread over the globe. You may be a teacher, student, engineer, a clerk (retired people also), unemployed youth or just an idler; if you are a water-friend we can be actively involved in a global effort to understand hydrology and also to conserve precious water which flows into the sea carrying valuable surface soil with it.
I like to divide this website into two parts. The first part we may call the global school of hydrology. The second part may be global society for conservation of water. The membership register and field of activity will be different; but the love of water will bind both the groups under a wide umbrella and so the same water-friend can be a member of both.
MEMBERSHIP REGISTER
Any water-friend may enter his name in the register. The register will have columns indicating Nationality, region, district, municipality or village alongwith details of the member.
Somebody can suggest suitable numbering system so that each member can be identified by a personal number. By scanning the register one can easily spot water-friends in his locality. Weekly meetings can be held in a suitable place like a garden, a public place or in a water-friend’s house to chalk out programme of action etc.
CONTINUOUS NEWS AND VIEWS MAGAZINE
This will enable the members to express their ideas. There will be separate boxes like Question box, Answer box, Letter box etc. The members can themselves enter question, suggestions etc in the relevant boxes. Some body across the globe may answer your questions. If a question is not replied within, say, 6 months, the question will be transferred to another box called Riddles.
Initially I like to enter three essays in the magazine for global school of hydrology. I welcome brickbats which I can convert into food for thought. A few bouquets are harmless. But silence can be lethal.
In the magazine of water conservation society I want my essay on Bharatapuzha – the sacred river of Kerala. I have an association with this river of more than half century. When I was young , we had difficulty in crossing the river at Tirunnavaya even in Summer. The river used to flow in two or three channels, sometimes neck deep. The water was crystal clear and I always used to carry a bath towel to swim and take bath in the river. The river is about a km wide at this point and the crossing an enjoyable experience for the body and soul. Today you can drive in a jeep right from Shoranur to Ponnani. Tall grass grows in the river bed because the sand has already been removed. My suggestion involves utilizing the wild grass to strengthen earthen embankments which will serve the twin purpose of conservation of water and a means for people to cross the river. This programme can be adopted in any dry river with flow of water limited to monsoon periods. Another small note regarding MVD (mountain valley dams) for conservation of water along the foot of mountain ranges may also been included. Experts in the field may calculate the quantity of water that can thus be stored by both the means.
Wishing you all a happy new year,
Your Waterfriendkks
Suggestion box
Those engaged in mining activities can help in collecting data of temperatures at points, say, every 50 mts. below the surface of the earth. The data collected across the globe will enable software experts to draw iso-therms below the surface of the earth. Data from the geological well being constructed by Russiens and at points in the rift valley etc can also be included. By computer projections we may be able to draw an isotherm of 100 C which will be the top floor of the “pressure cooker”.
