WHY DO COWS LICK US? Cows lick us , not for love , but because they lose salt through sweat . The cells must have saline content in them for biological functions . There is a theory that life began in the sea. As sea water contains salt , cells are salty. We get enough salt from vegetables and meat; but cows eat grass only . They need to recoup the salt lost through sweat. Elephants do not sweat . So they need no salt in their diet. Give them sweet things and they are happy! Children enjoy feeding them bananas and appam (a dish made of jaggery and rice powder), normally sold in temples.
