LOCAL LEGENDS

LOCAL LEGENDS Peruvanam Shiva temple It is believed that the deity of tall Shiva temple here was installed by th sage Puru , who did tapasya and pleased the Lord. He was given the ling , with instructions that it should not be placed on the ground except at the top of the hill . He climbed it and when he reached the top , he felt te urge to urinate . So he placed it on a tree (to avoid touching the ground) and went away and released the pressure . There was no water to clean after urination . So he touched the earth and recited in his md the Varuna manthr.Lo! the earth gave in and a pond was formed there . It s known as thodukulam (thodu=touch and kulam=pond) It is here that the villagers take bath The sage went back and anointed the deity at the top of the hill. Puru maharshi is seen in a niche near the tall temple. People cut down the whole hill, leaving a circle around the deity and another temple of Shiva was built on the ground, to the north of the original one . This I known as eratteppan( double lord) You can ee a big lingam and one small one near by. There are deities of Shreeparvathy in the back and Ganesh , Dakshinamoorthy etc. Outside , in the walled temple campus , is Goshalakrishna.
