LATER HISTORY-FREEDOM MOVEMENT
During the first decades of the twentieth century , there was wide spread movement for the freedom of India. Hundreds of people sacrificed their life and thousands were jailed . the campaigns were led by Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. In the history book , it is told that Gandhi gave us freedom , as if it is an apple which was plucked by him and distributed to us.
It is worth remembering that there was no such movement in Ceylon or Burma . The former actively participated in the British war efforts against Japan. They too got freedom.
How then , can we say Gandhi gave us freedom? The fact is that Britain became neck deep in debt ; they wanted to get rid of the burden of India . (They were ready to sell this country to America.) A new ‘United States Organisation’ was formed to prevent wars and it was decided to free all colonies , including those in Africa . So we too would have become I dependent . If we had supported Britain in the war , we could have got undivided India . An outsider can easily say that we were foolish!
JALIANWALLA BAUGH
Colonel Dyer is hated by all Indians. He deliberately gunned down a number of people at Jalianwalla , a small maidan with only one exit. Terrified men and women ran in panic and some fell into the well. . The bullet holes can still be seen.
Why did the Englishman do this heinous act? Normally British soldiers were very correct in their behavior.
The reason can be found if we examine the back ground. Lawlessness and terrorist activities were rampant throughout North India . Bhagat Singh was the leader. The Government became helpless . So the decision was taken to terrorize the freedom fighters . It had the desired effect. India became calm.
In London , Dyer was tried by Court Martial. People in large numbers donated money to defend him .
It is very difficult to study history impartially. The prejudices of the person are bound to influence the findings . I welcome criticism.
